When should I plan my safari to Tanzania?

Tanzania is a year-round safari destinations.

The best time to go on a safari in Tanzania largely depends on what you want to see. The country’s weather patterns can be broadly split into two distinct seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

The Dry Season (June-October) is best for wildlife viewing, with animals gathering at water sources and the Great Migration’s river crossings happening from July -August.

The Wet/Green Season (November-May) features lush landscapes, excellent birdwatching, lower prices, fewer crowds, and the wildebeest calving season from late January to March.

What is Special for the Plains of Serengeti?

The name “Serengeti” is derived from the Maasai word “Siringet,” meaning “the place where the land runs forever.” or “Endless Plains”.

The plains are special because they host the awe-inspiring Great Migration, offer vast and iconic landscapes, support an unparalleled density and diversity of wildlife (especially predators), feature unique geological formations, and represent an ancient, well-preserved ecosystem critical for global conservation.

It provides incredible visibility for wildlife spotting and stunning photographic opportunities, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Why The Great Wildebeest Migration?

It is the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth, often called “the greatest show on Earth” or one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.”

This spectacular, year-round phenomenon involves over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, continually traversing the vast Serengeti-Mara ecosystem between Tanzania and Kenya, driven by an instinctual search for fresh grazing and water.

Arusha’s Primary Tourism Routes (Northern Circuit)

The routes typically start in Arusha and proceed west and north, usually covering the following parks in a strategic loop to minimize driving time.

1. The Short/Express Route (3-4 Days)

This route is designed for travelers with limited time, focusing on the highlights closest to Arusha:

  • Arusha → Lake Manyara National Park: Known for its diverse ecosystems and tree-climbing lions.
  • Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro Conservation Area: The fastest way to reach the famous Ngorongoro Crater, offering the best chance to see the “Big Five.”
  • Ngorongoro → Arusha: Return journey.

2. The Standard Safari Route (5-7 Days)

This is the most common route, incorporating the Big Three parks of the region:

  • Arusha → Tarangire National Park: Usually the first stop, known for huge elephant herds and baobab trees.
  • Tarangire → Serengeti National Park: The main event, reached either by driving through Ngorongoro or flying from a nearby airstrip. This is the heart of the safari.
  • Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater: Visit the Crater before heading back east.
  • Ngorongoro → Arusha: Departure or connection to other activities (like Zanzibar).

3. The Comprehensive Circuit (7+ Days)

This route combines all the parks and allows for deeper exploration of the Serengeti, often following the Great Migration’s path:

  • Arusha → Tarangire
  • Tarangire → Lake Manyara
  • Lake Manyara → Serengeti (Central, Western, or Northern): Allows for 3-5 days of focused game driving in different areas of the vast Serengeti ecosystem.
  • Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater
  • Ngorongoro → Karatu/Crater Highlands: A stopover for cultural visits (like the Hadzabe tribe) before returning to Arusha.

Mountain Trekking

Arusha also serves as the base for trekking, particularly:

  • Mount Kilimanjaro: The routes (Machame, Lemosho, Marangu) start just east of Arusha.
  • Mount Meru: The second-highest peak in Tanzania, often used for acclimatization, located inside Arusha National Park.

These routes form the foundation of the personalized journeys Mobila Safaris curates.
